box design question

i am building a new box for a pair of 12" martxx audio 12wx3's. i'm looking at about 5 cubic feet and will be tuning to 40hz. my question is this do i want the largest port possable or do i want the subs as far away from the port as possable. i can do one or the other but i cant do both. pros and cons for each and what is the best way to go?

larger port = more efficent and more cone controll above tuning.

Farter away from the subs = more likely to be inphase with one another.

I'd guess it would be install dependant.

OK well heres the plan, the box will be 34" wide x 17" high x 28" deep = 5.0 cubic feet with a 9" port (17.5"x15.5"x9") = 1.4 cubic feet. this is for two 12's so there will be about an inch between the side wall and a sub and an inch between the other sub and the port wall.
