1 JL Audio 12w7 in ported enclosure

or

2 Alpine Type R (Dual 2ohm VC) 10's in ported enclosure?

The amp I have is this:

Hifonics ZX1000

1000W RMS, 2-Channel Zeus Series Amplifier

250 watts x 2 chan. @ 4 Ohms
500 watts x 2 chan. @ 2 Ohms
1000 watts x 1 chan. @ 4 Ohms Bridged

I have been told the JL 12w7 is a 3 ohm sub so this amp isn't really good for it, but will work if I'm careful with the gain settings, and bridge it to the 1000 watts RMS @ 4 ohms.

Whats the truth???

12w7 bridged at 3ohm FTW in this situation.

There's more cone area in the 10's, and the JL could blow your amp up.

If you gave me those 2 setups and asked me to build the loudest box for each I could get the 2 Alpines to put up a louder number on the TL.

But i have no idea what enclosure they are already in, or your vehicle's resonance preoperties.

So, in the boxes they are in? Who knows.

The subs are going into the trunk of a Crown Victoria.

That's not the only factor. You said that they were in enclosures already. The only way to know, is to play them both and listen.

Just because a system is loud on the TL, doesn't mean that it is louder to the ear.

My choice is the 2 type R's.

Thats what I am beginning to think also. The hiFonics amp that I bought goes better with the Type R's also. The JL is a 3 ohm sub and the HiFonics puts out 1000 RMS, but bridged at 4 ohms. I'm afraid it will destroy the amp over time if not quickly.
I think I'm going to go with the 2 Type R's and if the enclosure doesn't work out, I'm going to have jim build me one at his shop. I PM'd him about it already, so maybe he can do this and give me the best sound.

This is the amp I'm going to run to the Type R's

Hifonics ZX1000
1000W RMS, 2-Channel Zeus Series Amplifier

RMS Power Ratings:

250 watts x 2 chan. @ 4 Ohms
500 watts x 2 chan. @ 2 Ohms
1000 watts x 1 chan. @ 4 Ohms Bridged
It should make these Type r's Pound. They are dual 2 ohm subs also.

If you got a good price on the JL you could sell it and make some $$$$$. People pay stupid prices on JL.

Putting a 3ohm coil that is likely to see at least a steady 1ohm impeadance rise on an amp that is rated for 4ohm isnt going to hurt anything. I've run amps rated for 1ohm at 0.25 ohm. Granted, hifonics isnt that high end or tank built, but reguardless I dont think the w7 will damage the amp.

Now, the w7 12 and the 2 alpine 10's have a negligable difference in cone area as far as the ear is concerned. The w7 has 11mm more one way excursion, is 3dB more sensetive, is likely a lot more linear, and has higher Bl^2/RE IIRC.

IMO the 12w7 is the better option for street beating assumeing equally well constructed enclosures. :)

On the other hand, I dont like the sound of the two larger w7 drivers. However, Type-R is no SQ award winner either.

You will need D4 to get full power out of that amp. Considering that amp and D2 Type R's the W7 will be getting double the power. Comming from a paper stand point, the w7 has every thing on it's side.

I didn't see that.

Your amp will be mis-matched with a pair of dual 2 ohm subs.

The 12W7 is better based on that fact alone.
