im sure others can explain how it "works" better than i.. but i can attest to it being a decent start for spl. i had one RF P3 15" off of like 300rms in a 4th order peaking at 39 hrtz, and was hitting mid 30s..

well bandpass boxs are good for playing like a range of notes and some notes the sealed side is better and same as for the ported side.....but i mean if ur trying to do numbers then they r good as long as u build and tune it right....but if u really wanna know more about 4th orders talk to Gmonk or MP3....they can help ya out....

4th order is a sealed rear chamber playing into a ported chamber
port is the tuning
im too lazy to type out wats wat ...but thats it in a nutshell
r they good for spl..if done right hell yea
most of the really loud folks overseas use 4th orders..and there in the 170's

i got a 4th order in the trunk of my civic holding a btl 18, its loud as f*** but mines tuned too low so im not hitting as loud as i should be hitting but if i were to tune it a little higher i know id be in the mid 140s.
before this i had my 18 ported and i can def hear and feel the difference it catches all the lows so nicely and clearly

ive heard it was. am i wrong? sealed firing into that tunnel. would that constitute a port of some kind?

No.

You need a chamber and a port to have helmholtz resonance which is the property of air that allows ported boxes of any kind to work.

There may be some sort of quarter wave resonance but I dont know for sure because the energy is delocalized (Subs run the length of the line). Still, his diamond would only be useful down to ~80Hz due to its short length. More or less it is just an easy way to get a lot of sealed woofers in a small space. The frequencies it is reproducing are sufficiently low and the size is sufficiently small to where from an initial look I wouldn't guess that the design is giving any significant gains.

Tommy did what a physicist would do if they wanted to ensure they got loud. Isolate the back wave from the front wave so you dont have to worry about any cancelations anywhere. Then you just have to give it a lot of power and use efficient drivers.

indeed it is the rear wave that is the cause of cancellation in most enviornments.

but

without it, most of us would be super lost.

Very true, but most of us dont have 24 subs and a dumpster sized enclosure lol.
