Started MY build. Leave it to me to make a typo in a thread name.
Well we didnt get much done today... Mainly waited for Scott to call back so we could finish up the design for the box. We spent a while making sure the design was exactly how it was supposed to be, then jracer and a friend of ours had to figure out how to swap the motor on the table saw (took a good 30mins since it was a wrong motor, but he got that to work anyways) then we started building the boxes. When i saw boxes, theres going to be 4 seperate boxes. It will be stronger that way. Each will be built out of 3/4" MDF and the interior will be resined and 2x4ed to hell, and it will be double baffled. Big Mike likes his boxes to be solid.
Each box is about 6.73ft^ IIRC. With 100sq in on port at 35hz. The little notch you see cut out is for a little hump in the sides. Just going to be a little raised box built over it.
But we didnt get much done today, spent most of the time on the design then just did a little on the building. Got the 2 bottom boxes about 70% done. Only snapped a few pics.
Heres the bottom right box.
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/galamonkey/Picture1175.jpg
Heres the same box a with another piece on.
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/galamonkey/Picture1176.jpg
This is what both boxes together look like.

He's running 4 18s. So it looks like individually chambered, centralized ports, and semi-clamshell design.
How did I do Devin?

Going in the Explorer? Me likey.

Ya, 4 individual boxes. Each has its own port and they will be glues, screwed, nailed, and bolted together. Will be a clamshell with the ports in the center.
4 18s in my expedition.

A Billion deebeez. Or something to that effect hopefully.
Im not that worried about what it will do on the mic, just as long as its loud to the ear playing music and it moves alot of air.

Btw, I got 5 more Kinetik HC2400s. So now I got 10 of em total.

When I was your age I had 2 Pyramid 15s in a 5 cube sealed box, powered by a Pyramid Gold Series 800 watt four channel, in a 78 Corolla Liftback......

Definately. Luckily I live at home so I dont have any expenses... I just pay for gas and some food whenever I go out.
Well all 4 boxes are built Now they just need to be resined and braced. Then it just needs to be put in car, covered, trimmed, made pretty, and wired up!
Im so excited... You dont even know. Should be done by the end of the month.
CBFryman

Everyone is getting louder. I'm thinking about going in the other direction. Making a show box and seal the 15's and be done with it. I will still be able to comete 139.9.
Keep the pics comming on this build.

Hope you have better luck than myself. I've already blown 3 fully loaded BTLs on 4000 watts. The last 2 only lasted about 4 weekends! Anyway, can't wait to see the final product. Should be pretty **** crazy!

Have you fixed that box yet?
Well 4000 watts for dayli per sub is too much on any kind of sub regardless and if the box is not right that can also blow subs up. my .02
splblazer
04-11-2007, 10:01 AM
I never had any problems until I added the 2nd amp to each sub. With 1 6500 per sub it will play all day, with 2 I have to take it easier on it.
What's all day to you? 8 hours? 24 hrs? A bass race Run all day long?
Everyhere can say all day but I don't think so maybe at low volume but come on there is no sub that's going to take an Hour straight with 4000 watts going to it every second.
splblazer
04-11-2007, 01:02 PM
No equipment is going to stand to constant abuse. I would consider full tilt for an hour abuse. The 15s I run are the same that I have had for the last year. The only shows I didn't use them for were Finals and SBN. By all day I was refering to regular usage as I drive the truck around.
Now that's a better way on saying...thanks for the clarification Mr. Mackey:)

Chuck
04-16-2007, 01:13 AM
With the humidity it took a good 12 hours for the resin inside the box to dry. The ports were painted with roll on bedliner. I know it wont be the best for SPL, but if it comes down to looking badass and losing .2db or gaining .2db and looking like **** (spray paint), ill take the looks. You can see in a few pics one of the side pannels. All vinyled up. The whole thing will be trimmed off to the B pillar and vinyled in 2 different shades of gray. And you gotta love having 4 walled 18s and still being able to have your seats all the way back and fully reclined. I could take a nap in there if i needed to.... And the rest of my Kinetik HC2400s came in, so now I got 10 total.

I gotta rewire... Im getting 77 amps of current.... PER COIL!

Amps or volts?
Have you checked for DC?
CBFryman
05-10-2007, 10:34 AM
77a of current per coil?
Chuck
05-10-2007, 04:47 PM
Jake from Sundown sent me this PM.
Based on Loyd's numbers you had about 4150 watts per woofer on tap at 12.8 volts supply. At your load of 0.35 ohms per coil at 2075 watts per coil that means 77 amps of current per coil if I did the math right.
That is a pretty substantial amount of current whether the power itself was a problem or not, you may have blown the tinsel leads in two -- that would be one of my first guesses at this time based on what is happening now.
If you re-wired to 2.8 ohms per pair, or 1.4 per amp that means about 1250 watts per amp at 12.8 volts, or 2500 watts per woofer. This time only 30 amps per coil.
So yeah, its 77 amps of current. Im off to Illinois right now but when I get back im taking the top subs out and seeing whats wrong. When its all fixed im rewiring them.
pimpedout97x
05-11-2007, 10:39 AM

CalusaCustomConcepts
05-11-2007, 05:22 PM
I'd say your Voltage was higher than that with your alternator....
But still, check your tinsels. After you fix it check the amps for DC. That will kill the coils at 10 amps per coil....

When you're running 5,000rms to a speaker @ .35ohm, **** is going to go wrong.
For daily beating, thats just too much power. Not just bad luck, just a dumb move on my part running that much power at that ohm load. Id be pretty confident in them taking 4,000rms daily @ 1 ohm or above in a box with a little less port. When I get my stuff, I wanna listen to it. Whether its Type Rs, Treos, Xplods, or BTLs, im going to crank it. No point in having something that I cant listen to for more than 15 seconds.
One thing I will say is dont run 5,000rms to a BTL daily. I dont know how the hell Meade or anyone else does it, but it doesnt seem to work to well. I mean they really took the abuse I put em through... Especially for 2.5x their RMS @ .35ohm in a big ported box. We dropped the 2 top subs today and on one, the tinsels are broken, and in both the cone is seperated from the spider. The coils are a little dark, but definately still playable. The speakers are cut up and waiting for recones. Gotta order em either today or tomorrow. I wont be making the show during the weekend, but whatever. Im just runnin the 2 bottom subs for now. Goin easy on em. They're loud enough for a daily beater until I get it all workin. I mean with 2 subs I can still do hair tricks with both windows all the way down... Anyways, Ill take a pic of the tinsels and cone seperated and show you guys later.

Well, here you go. The reason the former is so bent is from the cone slapping it from playing the other subs.

And when you're picking up a heavy sub, make sure the place you grab isnt sharp.

Breaking in these types of Subs is VERY VERY important!!!! especialy when you have that much power on them....they would have still be jamin if you would have broken them in.. G-Monk I bet you never even smelt the coils these subs can handle that power....but breaking in is a must other wise yall rip the coil off ever time.....I know you remember how stiff they were!!..lol

chuck's BTLs are all fully loaded with all the options FI offers.
The FI BTL Full option can handle 4-5K no problem ....not for extended periods of time but a 40-50 second demo should be no problem

Yeah, be careful. Those new baskets aren't as refined as the european ones. I did the same thing when I picked up a new MT last year.

Whats up guys, I just noticed some ppl thinking that steve's subs werent standard BTL's. Honestly guys, we are a company that makes money off options, if there were more options that we could do to make a sub better and make money off of it, we would do it. Why would we make something special for one person, when everyone (including us) could benefit from it. Most all of you know me, except for some of the new breed here in FL, and I will tell you straight up.
Thanks guys
Shawn
