Id stick with a simple platform. Any quality semi-auto pistol or quality revolver will do the trick.

I carry Glocks. They are simple and they work. Good enough for me. The two carry guns that I really want are a S&W Shield 9mm and a small revolver, like a S&W J-Frame or Ruger LCR.

If youre buying one pistol, and its going to be the only gun you own, Id probably rock a Glock 26 or Glock 19. Heres some links. These would all be great carry guns. Some are bigger and heavier than others, and there are some Id prefer over others if it were going to be my only gun, but any of these would be great for a first gun and a carry gun.

If you want to get seriously into it, and get a small arsenal that you can use for sport or defense, you can buy a budget but quality pistol, shotgun, and rifle for less than $1,000. If I had a $1,000 max budget and wanted a pistol for carry, a shotgun for home defense, and a rifle just to have for whatever you may or may not need it for, this would be a good starter setup.

If you think of it as just spending $950 it seems like a whole lot of money. You have to think of it as an investment... Not only as an investment because if anything laws pass, they will skyrocket in value, but an investment in your safety and well-being.

Its worth it. Cant believe I wanted so long to do some gun buying. But as I said, Id probably go for a Glock 26 or Glock 19. If your girl wants to carry every day, a 26 would work if she wants to carry in her purse. Maybe something even smaller would be better, like the Shield 9mm.

The best advice i can give you is go to a range that rents pistols. Shoot as much as you can and find the one that fits you best.

As far as calibers, they are all pretty much available now. The harder calibers to find are going to be .357 sig, 45LC, and other non standard ones like that.

I started off with a Smith & Wesson M&P40 compact when I was 19-20 yrs old. Reliable pistol but to thick to conceal for my liking and it had too much recoiil since its a .40 and a compact. The Smith and Wesson Shield 9mm is a great choice though like Chuck said. I think Bonez has the Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm, he told me that they were great pistols before I picked up my own. The Shield would be a good choice for concealability. Cost is right and they are reliable. You can get said Shield for around $400 retail I believe, so imagine getting it near dealer cost. I now own a few Sig P series pistols and enjoy them very much.

Good idea, but around here in FL they stopped doing that. Too many nut jobs renting guns and shooting themselves in the head at Shoot Straights.

Get a friend to take you or take a class where they offer pistols to shoot.

ill take a look at zaims SnW Shield when i see him :O

I'm very drawn to 40's and 45's aesthetically. However, i know they aren't practical for concealment. they're just absolutely beautiful. most of the time rather.

Xds is probably your best best if you want a small .45 or maybe a glock 30s

His is an M&P fullsize I believe. But the Smit & Wesson MP40 compact holds 10 + 1 in .40. Not bad. I still love my Sig P239 though its much thinner then the M&P pistols and glocks. Holds 8 + 1 in 9mm (single stack magazine). But this thing shoots so so great. It blows most guns I've handled away. They can be had for $600-650 in mint used condition with 2 magazines.
